Social psychology is a scientific study of how the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined, and implied presence of others. Social psychologists explore these influences from three perspectives: ‘actual’ (the social environment), ‘imagined’ (internalized norms), and ‘implied presences’ (beliefs in supernatural beings).

– The social environment is the most salient and powerful influence on an individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Social psychologists have found that people are more likely to be aggressive when they’re in a group than alone because groups provide cover for individuals who wish to act aggressively without being singled out as responsible or liable.
– Social psychologists are interested in how people think about and react to other members of their society, be they close friends or complete strangers. A social psychologist would ask questions such as What is the meaning of this person’s behavior? Why does he/she behave that way? How do I respond to his/her actions or words?
Social psychology emerged from a broader scientific movement known as “social dynamics,” which includes many disciplines but focuses on understanding patterns of human interaction.
