Your kidneys are the size of a human fist, and they’re located on either side of your spine. They’re found posterior to your abdomen and below your rib cage. These two organs work together in order to produce urine, regulate blood pressure, filter metabolic wastes from the bloodstream (including excess water), and maintain acid-base balance in the body.
The kidneys consist of the renal cortex, which is a tissue rich in blood vessels. The kidney cells that are found here help regulate how much fluid and electrolytes get excreted into the urine by way of filtration – these unit-shaped structures within the glomeruli produce an ultrafiltrate liquid from our bloodstream to be secreted out as urine.
These same types of cells also work with your bones to balance calcium levels in the body.
